I am the first to admit that I’ve never been very interested in the BMAs because I don’t think the nominees reflect anything about music happening in Boston. It’s more of a checklist of names of people who happen to have been from, or once lived in Boston, making waves out in the world. Many of the acts don’t even play in Boston ever. A good example is the band Mighty Mighty Bosstones as a nominee for best live band. I could be wrong, but I don’t think they’ve performed in Boston in 2008 yet. They usually just have the 5 day hometown throwdown at the end of the year. I’m sure they’re wonderful live, but when I hear Boston Music Awards, I like to think it should be more closely tied to what’s happening in town. That said, the list is certainly full of the usual ultra-dull and conservative choices, but there are a few real locals involved in Boston music who have made the list, including: Girls, Guns, and Glory, Mean Creek, and Drug Rug.

So head on over. I’d suggest you vote for people who actually live and play in Boston as opposed to those who once did, but it’s your call.

The ceremony takes place on Dec. 7 at The Roxy.
