Darling Pet Munkee Issue 7: Kung-Fu Sandals

We present to you - Kung-Fu Sandals - the final story and song of Darling Pet Munkee's debut EP, Glows in the Dark! (Other stories here.)

While it was virtually impossible to track down any stories or examples of actual Kung-Fu Sandals ordered via this particular ad, it appears that they are simply a standard rice-straw sandal available as a common item.

While the sandals themselves are an unremarkable item, there are a few fascinating nuggets here. While its precise origins are unclear, Kung Fu is most definitely known specifically as a Chinese martial art (as opposed to Karate, which is widely regarded as the common Japanese martial art). Thus, it is, at the very least, odd that Kung-Fu Sandals should originate in Japan (and make their way to you via a retailer in Bridgeport, Connecticut).

They are ideal for indoors/outdoors. Hmmm...

The idea that some kid could buy some sandals from Japan and use those to channel martial arts that would otherwise need to be learned through extensive training, is typical of the comic-books ads we've explored in the whole DPM series. They are all based on selling something too good to be true - a shortcut to skills, powers, mystifying creatures, and just general advantages over others.

Kung-Fu Sandals are a perfect example of the objectification, exotification, and appropriation of Asian culture. I won't write an essay on the topic here, but it's clear that the Kung-Fu Sandals play further to the ridiculous stereotype that the people of Asia are all highly skilled fighters - a stereotype highly perpetuated within the comic-book literature of the time (and probably still today).

In writing the song "Kung-Fu Sandals," we elected to include the "Oriental Riff" while not including any other aspects of Chinese or Japanese music to match the contextual exotification (some may say racism) of the item. The implication is that by simply including this motif (these four pentatonic-scale notes), we trivially evoke Asian culture through the lens of American dramatization.

What These Vegans Eat: Week of 12/19/2011

This week, of course, was a holiday week and we actually did get together with my family, so following is a bunch of photos of things I actually remembered to photograph:

Sophia's Rock Beat: 12/15/11-12/17/11

This may be the last Rock Beat of 2011 before I do the full round-up with all the videos and stats of everything I saw, as we did last year! 2010 we saw 139 individual local bands and I think we beat that number this year. I gotta crunch the math up but I'll be back next week with the announcement - WHO DID I SEE THE MOST THIS YEAR! WHOA?! That should keep you on the edge of your seat through Xmas.

Before all that though - here's what I think will be the last of my videos this year (unless someone drags me out of my end-of-december hibernation for a rock show. Seriously, you want me at your show, let me know- and make it worth my while! sophia@donotforsake.com).

12/15 we went to Church to catch an old friend (who moved to San Francisco) that we used to play with all solo acoustic all the time - roughly ten years ago - Bryan McPherson. I found his intensely political-personal songs to ring as true with me now as they did when we first met - and he put on a very rousing hometown performance just him, his acoustic guitar, and occasional harmonica. Bryan Video 1, Bryan Video 2, video 3:

Up next were Swaggerin' Growlers - fighting irish punk at it's finest: SG Video 1, SG Video 2, SG Video 3:

On 12/17 I had the pleasure of lending my band, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling to rock a benefit for The Children's Room at The Regent Theatre on an amazing bill that started with Tanya Donelly and Bill Janovitz:

then the enormous power-pop of The Vivs :

and then the Big Dipper reunion! Big Dipper formed in the mid-80s and were an awesome post-rock alternative (back when "alternative" sort of meant something) band that had some big success. Merge even recently re-released some of their records! here's their whole set:

Sophia's Rock Beat: 12/09/11-12/11/11

Two weekends ago we practically moved into Radio in Union Square for a very epic weekend of ROCK.

December 9th one of the umpteen bands I'm in, The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library had the absolute pleasure of playing Edrie's birthday party at Radio with Rick Berlin and Walter Sickert and the ARmy of BRoken TOys. Here is Michael's official recap of the night. MJEMLVideo.
Rick Berlin:

Walter Sickert and the ARmy of BRoken TOys:

The very next night we were back at Radio for Mixtape 1988. Where super-groups formed to pay homage to the year in music of 1988.
Jaggery did an amazing job with their set - I only got two songs of it but it was all surprising and spot-on perfect. Jaggery does the Cocteau Twins and doing Buffalo Stance by Neneh Cherry:

Next up, Big Lights Big Rod (featuring Ashley Willard, Rodrigo van Stoli, Kate Murdoch, Magen Tracy and more). Big Lights Big Rod do Under the Milky Way by The Church. Big Lights Big Rod do In Your Room by The Bangles:

Pour Somerville Sugar on Me (comprised of Brendan Boogie, Christoph Krey, Abbie Barrett, Chuck Ferreira and more) closed out the night with some more classics, but first Brendan raps! Somerville Sugar does I'll be there for you by Bon Jovi, Somerville Sugar does Fairytale of New York by  The Pogues, and they closed out the night with an impressive and sobering performance of Living Colours Cult of Personality:

Sunday night, we went to the benefit for Kitty Connection and caught the amazing grunge-n-roll of I, Pistol

and my first time (of I'm sure will be many) catching Cancer Killy Gemini CKG Video 1, CKG Video 2, CKG Video 3:

Sophia's Rock Beat: 11/20/11-12/05/2011

Oh Hey! Another Sophia's Rock Beat!

Nov. 20th we skipped that other big event that was happening across town and instead went to celebrate Rob Potylo's party at Church in honor of the three! records he put out this past year. Battle House (delightful post-math punk) opened, video 1, video 2, video 3. Rob playlist:

11/29 we went to TT's for the CQ Presents Booking Launch Party which included a killer set from Autochrome (very post-punk rock a la Wire & Joy Division with a hint of Interpol in the vocal delivery.) Autochrome Video 1, AC Video 2, AC video 3:

The next night, we caught Sarah RabDAU and Self-Employed Assassins and Box Five opening for Pearl and the Beard (Pearl Video 1, PatB Video 2, PatB Video 3, PatB Video 4) at Radio! Ever-enchanting, Sarah RabDAU video 1, video 2. Box Five opened with their adorable classi-pop - with a number of covers sprinkled in (including Arcade Fire & The Pixies). B5 Video 1, B5 video 2, B5 video 3, B5 video 4.

12/04 we happened on the band Tallahassee at Middle East Up(lots of young ladies there, which I was told was due to some football thing I don't understand) - they played straight-up Americana. Video 1, Video 2. Then we buzzed over to Radio to catch Bunny's a Swine (one of my favorite Northampton imports- they remind me of The Vaselines and that makes me happy). BiAS video 1. Video 2:

12/5 we caught Saraswathi Jones at All Asia doing a cover of The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library's Amylee:

Then we shuffled over to the Middle East Corner to eat couscous and enjoy the acoustic sounds of John Sage and then Kayln Rock. John Sage video 1, JS video 2. Kayln Rock with Josh Cohen VIDEO

Michael J. Epstein and Sophia Cacciola's Hanukkah Song: "Eight More Days of Hanukkah!"

We had to rush to get it out in time for the holiday, but here it is for your ears during Hanukkah season...

(Also don't forget to check out our special seasonal number that we recorded for Sleepover Shows!)

Lyrics:
"Hi Sophia."
"Hi Michael."
"I sure wish every holiday were Hanukkah."
"Let's make it happen!"

When the groundhog sees its shadow, 8 more days of Hanukkah.

When cupid fires his arrow, 8 more days of Hanukkah
When the Easter bunny finds an egg, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
Remember when Martin Luther King said, "8 more days of Hanukkah."

We celebrate it every night.
An endless festival of lights.

Columbus sailed the ocean blue, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
George Washington always told the truth, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth rock, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
The Declaration was signed by John Hancock, 8 more days of Hanukkah.

We celebrate it every night.
An endless festival of lights.
Spin your dreidels, give some gelt.
Raise your Shamash high and shout...

Betsy Ross sewed the 13 stripes, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
Soldier’s fought to protect our rights, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
St. Patrick drove out the last snake, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
Jesus eats his birthday cake, 8 more days of Hanukkah.

We celebrate it every night.
An endless festival of lights.
Spin your dreidels, give some gelt.
Raise your Shamash high and shout
Hanukkah!

Light another candle, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
This menorah’s getting hard to handle, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
Mother's, father's, new year's too, 8 more days of Hanukkah.
You don’t even have to be a Jew for 8 more days of Hanukkah.

We celebrate it every night.
An endless festival of lights.
Spin your dreidels, give some gelt.
Raise your Shamash high and shout
Hanukkah!

What these Vegans Eat: Week of 12/12/11

Monday, 12/12 I made a chana masala with brown rice. chick peas, potatoes, sauce: tomato juice (I use Pomi), yellow madras curry powder, sriracha, coconut milk, garlic, onions. simmered up. I usually boil the potatoes separately, otherwise it takes all year for them to cook with the sauce.
12/14 tofurkey sandwich

chana masala 12/12
Tuesday, 12/13 I have no photo and no memory of what I ate!

Wednesday 12/14 - we ended up in Jamaica Plain to pick up one last shot for our Darling Pet Munkee video, X-Ray Specs. We tried to go to the Milky Way for vegan pizza but they were closed for a private function - so we instead went to City Feed (independent grocer/sandwich/coffee shop) for Tofurky sandwiches and soy lattes! ingredients: Veggie nayo, grain mustard, marinated onion, avocado, locally made red pepper relish, red leaf lettuce on an Iggy's baguette.

12/16 tacos!
12/17 Masala Dosa
12/15/11 was our 5th wedding anniversary and we went to True Bistro to celebrate. We shared the Grilled romaine heart salad with: French lentils, roasted tomatoes, mustard, croutons. I had the House made tagliatelle (read: noodles in cashew sauce) with smoked tofu. Mike had the crusted tempeh with lentils & tomatoes braised in red wine, shaved leeks, heirloom carrots. For dessert we shared the brownie with rasberry champagne sorbet and the death by chocolate cake.

12/16/11 someone said something about tacos on facebook and I was all over that when I got home. Corn tortillas with pepperjack daiya cheese (which, now that I've had this a second time, I've decided is really gross - it's slimier than the othe daiya flavors), whole foods brand salsa (chipotle, I think, - was delicious), refried beans from a can, and fresh avocado slices and salad - super quick, easy, and yummy.
12/17 Aloo Gobhi

12/17/11 we played the Regent in Arlington and we had a lot of time to kill between soundcheck and doors so we went to Punjab for dinner. I have a problem in that I can never resist ordering Aloo Gobhi (potatoes and cauliflower.) Michael had the Masala Dosa (a chickpea crepe filled with mashed potatoes).

12/17 bonus! hot cocoa
Bonus! later that night after the show, I made us hot chocolates with Ricemellow fluff (a fluff alternative made out of brown rice syrup).

Sunday 12/18 we spent the day eating with vegan friends - we went back to True Bistro for brunch (I had the seitan burger and Mike had the waffles.) and for dinner we had take-out from House of Tibet in Teele Square. Sorry no photos but we shared momos (dumplings) and stir-fried noodles, and curried potatoes, and tsel baklab (vegetarian patties).

Darling Pet Munkee "X-Ray Specs" Music Video!!!

Darling Pet Munkee is a project for which Sophia and I have teamed up with Axemunkee's Catherine Capozzi to write songs about items sold in the back of old comic books! I've been writing posts recounting the stories of the items. X-Ray Specs was a particularly odd tale.

We Munkees have decided to shoot music videos for all 7 of the songs on our debut Glows in the Dark!, which we are releasing in January 2012 with a party here in town at Radio rock club! We've been hard at work shooting "Genuine Soil from Dracula's Castle" (see posts about shooting day 1 and day 2), but managed to sneak in a one-day shoot for "X-Ray Specs" a week ago.

The main concept delivered by the ads for X-Ray Specs is that you can see through both skin (to see bones) and clothing (to see underwear). So, we developed the idea that a sketchy-looking person (kind of like the ad above on the left) would attend a DPM live performance. Once popping on the specs, the band appears in our signature skeleton outfits and the audience appears in their underwear! Throw in a little bit of a political jab and some random characters from other DPM songs (Dracula, a monkey, a kung-fu fighter, and an astronaut) and we present to you, my directorial debut..."X-Ray Specs" the music video...

With the help of Boing Boing and a very enthusiastic cast promoting it, the video got over 5000 views on its first day in the wild!!!

Darling Pet Munkee

Sea-Monkeys, X-Ray Specs, and a necklace full of soil from Dracula’s castle are among the many bizarre items that were sold in comic-book ads of yore. Garage/surf rock supergroup Darling Pet Munkee aims to tell the tales of these lost items in song. For the next 6 months, the band will be releasing one song a month - with accompanying history - examining the bizarre knick-knacks sold via these misleading ads that promised fighting skills, wondrous creatures, and grand journeys. On January 14, 2012 at Radio, the full 7-song EP, _Glows in the Dark!_ will have been revealed.

The band name is derived from both the sale of living squirrel monkeys via ads (“Darling Pet Monkey”) and the combination of Sophia Cacciola (drums, vocals) and Michael J. Epstein (bass, vocals) of The Prisoner-themed act, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, and Catherine Capozzi (guitars) of Axemunkee.

Gozu

Formed in 1999 by lead guitarist JJ Rassler (founding member of influential Boston bands DMZ and guitarist / producer for The Queers) and singer/rhythm guitarist Jen D'Angora, along with bassist Mike Yocco and drummer Eric Almquist, The Downbeat 5 draws on British invasion bands like the Yardbirds and Animals, spikes the brew with the toughest female vocals this side of a women's prison riot, and tops it all off with decades worth of aggression, attitude and volume. The band is often heard on Little Steven's Underground Garage and is featured on his "Coolest Songs in the World" compilation series. The DB5 have shared the stage with such acts as; Holly Golightly, Magic Christian, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Pretty Things, The Knitters, The Blasters, The Zombies, Flaming Stars, Preachers Kids, Muffs, Dick Dale, Detroit Cobras, Sylvain Sylvain, Jayne County and countless like minded bands. Their relentlessly tough live shows have sometimes been augmented with the guest appearance of friend and Animals guitarist, Hilton Valentine.

The Invisible Rays

The Invisible Rays are a company of musicians dedicated to communicating complex and antediluvian emotions from cinematic, rhapsodic, and rhythmic music without the crutch of a singer. No language – just the intervals, spaces and rhythms invented by:
Ned Armsby – drums and samples
Brendan Haley – keyboards
Eric Krauter – bass
Rafi Sofer – guitar

Originally formed in 2001 by Sofer and Armsby, the I-Rays crossed musical paths with first Krauter and then Haley through Sofer’s audio engineering work at Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA and convinced them to join forces to forge a new sonic landscape. Never ones to shy away from the science and technology of music, the four piece instrumental band creates new combinations and possibilities in sound. Manipulating and layering sonics using instruments and equipment that span decades of innovation in modern music technology, from Mellotrons to Roland Drum Machines and from Fender Deluxes to Symphonic Bass, no stone is left unturned in search of the perfect sound.

DNFMOMD play holiday benefit 12/17 with The Vivs, Big Dipper, Tanya Donelly and Bill Janovitz

The Vivs’ 2nd Annual Holiday Bash and Benefit!
Saturday, December 17th, 2011; 6:30 p.m.

The Regent Theatre

Featuring An All-Star Lineup of Bands and Performers:

Big Dipper
The Vivs
Tanya Donelly and Bill Janovitz
Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling
• The Lesley Ellis School Kids’ Chorus
Emcee: Brett Milano

To benefit The Children’s Room in Arlington, a center for grieving children and their families; serving over 50 communities in Greater Boston

Boston area power pop quintet The Vivs are delighted to host the 2nd Annual Holiday Bash and Benefit for The Children’s Room. All ages welcome!

The Vivs:

They say that if George Harrison, Alex Chilton, and Patti Smith had a three-way lovechild, she would be The Vivs. This Boston-based rock band plays driving, smart, and hooky post-punk/power pop. The Boston Globe hailed their 2009 CD Mouth to Mouth as “terrifically nervy; riff-charged, and sharpshooter sure” and named it a top ten of the year. Blurt Magazine called the band “impossible not to fall for,” naming them a “Best Kept Secret” poised for big things. To The Vivs, this show is a big thing; it’s their second year doing this benefit for The Children’s Room, an organization near and dear to them. Though fresh off the release of a new EP and sold-out release show, The Vivs don’t play out much. Come catch them in this great setting!

Big Dipper

Big Dipper is a Boston power pop/ rock band with a 25 year history. Although their music is in two new films, Losers Take All and I Melt With You, and a new album is due out early next year, they are very choosy about gigs. This is the first and only official show since 2008’s appearance with Robert Pollard’s (Guided by Voices) Boston Spaceships.

Tanya Donelly and Bill Janovitz

Two of Boston’s finest purveyors of alternative rock in a special set together. Tanya Donelly had a founding role in influential bands Throwing Muses, The Breeders, and Grammy-nominated Belly – as well as a solo career. Bill Janovitz is co-founder and singer/guitarist of Boston’s Buffalo Tom. One of the most heralded bands to come out of Boston in the 90s, BT’s excellent songwriting and raw-powered delivery earned them success nationwide and abroad. Link of them together last year.

Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling

Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling is a female-fronted duo of drums/vocals and bass. The band name and songs are all inspired by the ‘60s cult spy-fi TV show The Prisoner. They’re loud, arty, minimalist rock working in the realm of proto-punk/new wave/no wave bands and dark songwriters like Joy Division, Einsturzende Neubauten, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Diamanda Galás, Nina Hagen, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, and Leonard Cohen.

Lesley Ellis Children’s Chorus

Lesley Ellis Children’s Chorus is a group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders from Lesley Ellis School (in Arlington) who love to sing. In a similar spirit to that of the fabulous PS22 chorus, these kids and their teachers (including Guy Mendilow, who has his own impressive credentials as a world music artist) will perform a mix of traditional and contemporary rock/pop/post-punk songs (like “Under the Milky Way” by The Church). These kids really feel it!

Brett Milano (Emcee)

Brett is one of the greatest rock writers to come out of Boston, or anywhere. He is a rock lover, book writer (The Sound of Our Town; A History of Boston Rock and Roll), rock critic, and man about town.
