Imaginary Friends: The Movie - Do/did you have an imaginary friend?

My best current attempt to draw Yucky as I might
have at age 4...well, if you imagine a lot more
out-of-the-lines coloring and uneven lines.
I have recently decided to film interviews with people discussing their imaginary friends. If you had (or have) an imaginary friend and would like to participate in this project, send me an e-mail: MJE@MichaelJEpstein.com

Ultimately, I hope to make a movie of some kind out of it. First, here's why I am interested...

When I was a small boy, I had a friend named Yucky (here is his Facebook page). Yucky was tiny, maybe 3 inches tall, but could travel by teleportation, so his size was of little limitation. Yucky was a bit of a problem in public at times: he liked to swim in people's sodas in restaurants, and he occasionally colored on the walls in crayon, for example. Still, he was great to spend time with.

What fascinates me most about imaginary friends is not so much the psychological causes or implications of having and interacting with an imaginary companion, but rather the source from which the invented side of those conversations and interactions arises. There is something about the creation of art, the conception of alternate universes, and the layered, hypothetical cascades of scenarios that play out in my head that make it seem like I am sometimes allowed to glimpse into a reality outside of our own. It doesn't feel as if I've created something, invented something, or extrapolated our reality, but rather that I am somehow delivered those things via an external force. I don't quite believe in such a force, but I fail to identify how I might construct these things in my brain without my brain allowing me to realize that I am the creator.

Just the same way as songs sometimes (not always) appear to arrive in my brain in complete (or partial) form, the imaginary companion must source similarly. Are people really aware that their imaginary friend is not real? I think I was. At the very least, I knew he was just mine, that no one else could see him. Just as I know I am the creator of a song that I feel I've fraudulently earned via this channeling, a song that is solely mine, I recall that even tiny me knew that his brain had caused Yucky to manifest, yet he still found it impossible to deny the external existence of this quirky, tiny friend.

So, this brings me to the movie. I am just new to filmmaking, but am finding the experience of exploring stories and ideas through film extremely fascinating. I don't have a concrete final form for this particular project, but I envision collecting interviews with people willing to reveal as much as they can recall about their relationships with imaginary friends. Once I've compiled these, I hope to be able to weave them into a cohesive exploration of what it means to have an imaginary friend, how the creation of art (or life in the case of a friend) manifests in conscious vs. subconscious scenarios, and also to give people an opportunity to reconnect with what I view (and I hope others view it similarly) as a fond experience of always having a friend nearby when I needed one. Again, I don't really hope to explore elements of normal/abnormal psychology or to examine scientific theory regarding the creation of imaginary friends in response to environmental situations or anything of the like. (There is of course, no guarantee that I won't end up with such an exploration, but it is not my intention.)
I also hope to pair these interviews with images or animations conveying the recalled stories to allow for the fantastic stories to live in the visual space of film.

Again, if you had (or have) an imaginary friend and would like to participate in this project, send me an e-mail: MJE@MichaelJEpstein.com
I hope to begin shooting in August (in the Boston area). There is no particular timeline for the project, but my intention is to collect as many interviews as possible in a short time and then examine the material to determine how best to proceed.

Parlour Bells "Airwaves" featuring MJE and SC as part of choir - mini-documentary about the recording and the loss of WFNX from the radio dial

Parlour Bells just finished their new single "Airwaves" - a song inspired by the demise of WFNX and WBCN. The song explores just how significant a loss those stations are to the Boston music community. it also features a chorus of Boston rockers including Michael J. Epstein and Sophia Cacciola. They also put together this mini-documentary about the recording of the song and about how the loss of the stations has affected the Boston community. A special thanks to Glenn for including a wonderfully embarrassing photo of me from when I was 13.

Parlour Bells is also performing at the WFNX We Want the Airwaves Tribute!

This is not the first time we've had the pleasure of working with Glenn di Benedetto and other members of Parlour Bells. Glenn performed a duet with Sophia on the Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling cover of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," which was played during the daytime on WFNX by DJ Adam 12 - a precise example of how much WFNX was able to pull from local music and include it in spots in regular programming. This is extremely unusual for a commercial radio station and very valued within the Boston music community. We are still quite lucky to have local rock shows on WZLX and WAAF and a slew of great non-commercial radio shows devoted to local music (On the Town with Mikey Dee, Mass Ave and Beyond, Pipeline!, The Dweezil Show, several shows on WMWM, and more)

I also had the pleasure of doing a remix of Parlour Bells' "Heavy Dream" for their remix project.

Glenn also directed, edited, and did just about everything imaginable for Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling's "First We Take Manhattan" music video.

Sophia cast for cameo in FAT movie

Our friend, Mark Phinney (you can see him playing the "door man" in our X-Ray Specs video!) is making a movie in Boston called Fat. Fat is a funny, and dramatic look at food addiction. Facebook page.

synopsis: "Ken is a man that won't change his ways. Addicted to food, and bad health in general, he is headed on a one way path to an early grave. Despite help from his friends, he does what he wants, until a chance encounter that might just give himself the motivation he needs. Fat is a funny, and dramatic look at food addiction. It is an unflinching story based on Mark Phinney's own experiences and writings on the subject." The movie stars Melvin Rodriguez, who has quite the impressive IMDB page.

The movie will also have tons of great music by local bands (including The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library) and cameos and parts played by many characters from the local music community (including a cameo by me, as me, pretty much).

here's a really great piece Mark wrote for Salon called Fat Man.

Anyway, as is the way of 2012 there is a kickstarter page where you can pledge some funding/support towards the film - I encourage you to do so!

The Meet Ball will be the after-party to the first annual openDTL event, a neighborhood-wide open house, which will be held in Downtown Lynn throughout the day. The Meet Ball welcomes Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein to Downtown Lynn with two of their musical creations, Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling and Darling Pet Munkee (also features the guitar delights of Catherine Capozzi). The night will also feature delicious appetizers from several Lynn restaurants including our signature sponsor Lynn Meatland as well as Tatiana's Restaurant, Lupita Restaurant, Brother's Deli, D'Amici's Bakery, Wicked Tasty, Rolly's Tavern on the Square and many more. Sophia wins Best Female Vocalist from Boston Phoenix!

Last night Sophia won Best Female Vocalist 2012 from the Boston Phoenix for her work in Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling! Thanks so much to our friends and fans and everyone at the Boston Phoenix! It is such a huge honor and Sophia couldn't be more thrilled!

photo by Richard Bouchard, used without permission!

"It’s almost safe to assume Sophia Cacciola and her famously mustached companion Michael J. Epstein haven’t started five new bands in five different genres this week. The key word in that sentence is “almost.” But whereas the bulk of recent Cacciola/Epstein co-productions strive to make the listener smile — Darling Pet Munkee’s dork-core and the Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library’s orchestral indie, for two examples — the cloak-and-dagger shock waves of Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling demand to be taken seriously. Almost every DNFMOMD song corresponds to an episode of sci-fi classic The Prisoner, and Cacciola conjures the paranoia, righteous indignation, and existential panic of the exiled protagonist with breathless, husky outcries. All this, while keeping deadly precise time. There aren’t Best Music Poll categories for “Best Drummer” or “Best Singer/Drummer Hybrid,” which screws Cacciola out of winning more than one BMP award this year." - Barry Thompson, The Phoenix

The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library Daytrotter Session!

We had mentioned a while back about The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library's visit to Daytrotter's Horseshack studio in Rock Island, IL (more photos, videos, and info here)! (I had also previously done a Neutral Uke Hotel / The Motion Sick session and, we recorded a Laundromatinee session later on the same day as we did Daytrotter.)

If you are not already a Daytrotter member, you can get a free one-week membership, no payment method needed!

Well, now our session is here for your listening pleasure! The sessions are done direct to 2-track tape with no overdubs, edits, etc.

"There's a call hanging out there in the balance that a save is needed. It might be a bit of an over-exaggeration, but the feeling is that the better part of the universe is in a bit of a tailspin and there's no net stretched tautly below it. It's on-course for a horrific splatter, all broken bones and dead expressions. The impact is going to kill it. It's falling, screaming its jiggling face off - and no one's hearing a thing. The folks in the band Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library sound like the saviors that we might need to pull hard on the reins and get the graffiti-ed and pissed upon universe out of its own destiny. They insist that they think they can shine brighter than a billion solar bursts. They're damned sure of it..." (...MORE)

The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library visited WZLX's (100.7 FM) Boston Emissions with Anngelle Wood 6/10/12

Listen to the archive of the show (we performed "Amylee" and "Stranger" live and world-premiered the studio track "The Violinist"):

Show preview:
I am extremely excited to announce that The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library will be visiting Boston Emissions with Anngelle Wood (Facebook page) this Sunday (June 10!) to let people know about our next show (info down below). We'll be playing a song or two, making some announcements, premiering things...you know, good stuff that you won't want to miss. Not that you ever want to miss BE...The show starts at 10 PM and we'll be on sometime in the first hour of the show most likely.

Listen to the Stream Here

Boston Emissions has been a wonderful piece of local rock for over 20 years now (!!!) and Anngelle, who has hosted for several years now, has done amazing work to revive the Rock 'N' Roll Rumble (and keep the show!) after WBCN went off terrestrial radio, with Boston Emissions heading over to WZLX. We are thankful that she could make that happen and that she continues to feature some of the best local music each and every Sunday night on a commercial radio station with a very powerful broadcast reach.

Info about our rock show:
A still from "A Brief History of Flight"
June 15th show at TT's w/ Tallahassee (featuring former New England Patriot Brian Barthelmes), Cask Mouse (2012 Rock 'N' Roll Rumble Semi-Finalists), Velah (featuring former members of Static of the Gods and The Acre) - $10 / 18+). The show is the public live debut of our silent film "A Brief History of Flight" (trailer), during which we will perform the accompanying soundtrack. The film will not be shown again publicly (or posted online) for a while, but will be given on DVD to anyone purchasing our advance combo tickets (along with our 48 Hour Film Project movie and "Amylee" video)!

As a total aside, both The Motion Sick and Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling participated in the Rock 'N' Roll Rumble thanks to Anngelle and Boston Emissions and had an amazing time! (In a roundabout way, the Rumble is responsible for me getting drawn by Michel Gondry!)

The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library's "Faith in Free" EP is officially out today!!!

We had already premiered "Faith in Free Part I" on MAGNET a bit back, but now the full 3-song "Faith in Free" EP is out!!!

"Faith in Free" is a 3-song cycle written specifically for live performance with BalletRox. The band collaboratively wrote the piece while band member Jane Allard worked with BalletRox dancers to choreograph the piece.

Amazing guest vocalist Sarah RadDAU joined us for the live performance at the Strand Theater (she also provides guest vocals on the recording!).

Video of the live-dance performance:

In addition, the entire creation of "Faith in Free" was documented for Berklee Pulse's Banded project, which will be used in a variety of forms including a forthcoming full-length documentary following a number of bands through their songwriting processes.

We premiered the songs live at a PULSE showcase show earlier in the year.

Sophia and Michael cameo in André Obin's video for "Valencia" directed by Theodore Cormey

In addition to making some of our own music videos, we always have fun appearing as extras in other people's videos.

Here's AndrĂ© Obin's video for "Valencia" directed by Theodore Cormey, whom you may remember as the director of Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling's "Episode 1 - Arrival" video (included down below) and Ad Frank's "Winterthru" video (which we also appear in)!

While you won't see our faces in this, I do promise that we do make significant appearances here as masked enemy agents.

The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library Lyrics and Chords Collection - Faith in Free

The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library Songbook - Faith in Free edition
1.) Faith in Free Part I
2.) Faith in Free Part II
3.) Faith in Free Part III

Faith in Free Part I
knells, ringing out, ringing out, fading out
knells, ringing out, ringing out, fading out
Reflections in the glass show no future, only past
Reflections in the glass show no future, only past
Reflections in the glass show no future, only past

When I am laid in Earth
(remember me, remember me)
When I am laid in dirt
(remember me, remember me)
(remember me, remember me)
When I am laid in Earth
(remember me, remember me)
When I am laid in dirt

Reflections in the glass show no future, only past
Reflections in the glass show no future, only past
Reflections in the glass show no future, only past
Reflections in the glass show no future, only past

When I am laid in Earth
(remember me, remember me)
When I am laid in dirt
(remember me, remember me)
(remember me, remember me)
When I am laid in Earth
(remember me, remember me)
When I am laid in dirt

No reflections, broken glass show no future, show no past
(remember me, remember me)(remember me, remember me)
Remember me, remember me, when I am laid in Earth
Remember me, remember me, when I am laid in dirt

Faith in Free Part II
Hands in your pockets grasping for change
no one knows why we keep running away
twisting your fingers for dust to rearrange
no one knows why we keep running away
Look to the lights for guidance and blame
no one knows why we keep running away
They send you where they deem to chase after their dreams
but even with miracles they're never pleased

Everything you're doing is all right
You're fighting and you're fighting the good fight
Everyone you know thinks your future is so bright
Why can't you sleep at night?

There are only two ways home, a medal or a stone
either way you go, you just end up alone
but don't blame your shame on apples and snakes
circling and circling back to the same place
say it like you mean it and mean it like you say
no one knows why we keep running away
They send you where they deem to chase after their dreams
but even with miracles they're never pleased

Everything you're doing is all right
You're fighting and you're fighting the good fight
Everyone you know thinks your future is so bright
Why can't you sleep at...
The palace is in ruins and the ruins are a mine
listening through static to the static on the line
Everyone you know thinks your future is so bright
So why can't you sleep at night?

Faith in Free Part III

Turn off all the lights
let the voices fill your night
brandish your final sparks
because I'm not afraid of the dark.

I'm not afraid of the dark
smother the embers and sparks
cover the lights, kill the quarks
